If you haven't already, watch my 2026 April fools video here. This article contains major spoilers for that as well as Kenadian's video that it is based on. This article also contains spoilers for this episode of the Unstable Universe.
This is my first (and probably last) April Fools video I've ever made. It was so fun to make but also so unprofitable that it has basically cost me thousands (if not tens of thousands) of dollars in lost productivity.
But you know what? I'm fine with that. This was a passion project, after all!
In case you don't know, this is a parody of a parody of the Unstable Universe, which is a Minecraft SMP Series. So this video is like 3-4 fandoms deep. So that's why it should be no surprise that this is my worst performing video in a long time.
But again, I don't care. This was always just a passion project!
Below are a bunch of my (unorganized) thoughts about this video. Feel free to give it a read if you're interested!
First things first: this video originally had many more scenes planned for the script that featured even more YouTubers. But unfortunately, my video before this one took a lot longer than expected. So instead of having both February and March to make this video, I had only March.
So I had to cut a lot of planned scenes. As such, I was worried this video wouldn't end up being very long, which means the ultimate joke (the secret being revealed to be the friends we made along the way at the very end) wouldn't hit as hard.
The entire joke of this video is that you have to watch a 1+ hour long video to learn what the secret is, only for it to be the friends we made along the way. So the joke wouldn't work if the video was only 20 minutes.
I thought, okay, maybe the video will end up being 40 minutes. But boy was I wrong, seeing as it ended up being nearly 2 hours!
So, now I wonder...if I had kept my original plot with all the extra scenes, this legitimately could've ended up being like 4 hours long, which is crazy.
But with the benefit of hindsight, I think cutting the plot down into what it ended up being was the right choice. A nearly 2 hour long video is already more than enough for the joke to make sense. I also feel the story would've felt even more bloated if I had included more scenes.
I really underestimated just how amazing the footage we recorded would turn out. I was worried everyone would take this too seriously and it'd be boring, but they absolutely did not. And that's why I think this video turned out so long. Each scene ended up being way funnier than I thought so there was way less dull moments to cut out.
Anyway, in terms of this video's plot, it is heavily inspired by Kenadian's Unstable Universe parody and even the Unstable Universe in general. Many story beats are inspired by beats from that video, such as:
- Me and Brad obviously resemble Kenadian and Wato
- Us randomly befriending Sdslayer on public transportation only for him to betray us later (similar to Avatar's story arc)
- The Robot Resistance is meant to resemble the Far Lands Civilization, especially in how we completely forget about them until the very end of the video
- All the different groups like the Sunglasses Squad, Robot Resistance, and Ballportal Bandits are meant to resemble the many different Mafias (I make a reference to this by calling a mini cube a member of the Mini Mafia)
- The poor district resembles when Kenadian and Wato were trapped in the Nether mining camp
- Us breaking into GeoBlitzy's mansion resembles when Kenadian and Wato broke into the Night Vision Mafia's base
- The poor district getting taxed resembles the scene where the mining camp had their inventories searched
- Ender resembles Hector
- Brad dying at the end resembles Wato doing the same
- Brad being the ultimate director resembles Wato being the Misdirector
And in general I'd say both the first and last thirds of the video are pretty similar to Kenadian's video. I was considering making this a more obvious remake, but I've learned over the years it's better to make something original that's inspired rather than directly remake something.
But still, my favorite comments on this video are those that reference Kenadian's video and see all the references in this video! This video was quite literally made for people who liked Kenadian's video.
That being said, in the middle of this video, I start taking inspiration from the Unstable Universe in general (not just Kenadian's parody). In specific, this episode where Spepticle sacrifices himself for Parrot by confessing to Parrot's crime...even though Parrot was caught red-handed doing it by LettuceK...and LettuceK just...goes along with this?
It's so stupid (no hate to the Unstable cast of course) and that's why I parodied it in this video with Androxma's sacrifice. However, I actually think it makes more sense here since Vortrox technically never saw us break into the base. He was originally going to be there when we broke into the Sunglasses Stronghold but we didn't have enough actors, so instead I just made a quick joke asking where he was.
But this actually makes sense in the canon: after he found out we were going to break into the Sunglasses Stronghold, he went back to Geometry City to report us to the authorities. Then when he found out I won the Progressive Geode Party nomination, he decided to try and execute me using this dirt he had. But after Androxma confessed instead, since he never actually saw us break into the Sunglasses Stronghold, he was just forced to go along with it.
The whole election arc in the middle of this video was also inspired by the Unstable Universe kings arc or whatever it's called. Speaking of arcs, to me, this video has four main arcs:
- The Sunglasses Arc where we break into the Sunglasses Stronghold to get the secret
- The Proletariat Arc where we steal all of GeoBlitzy's gold to save the poor
- The Election Arc where I run for mayor to save the poor (again)
- The Ender Arc where we ultimately take down Ender
The main gimmick of the video is that each arc would just be another side plot. So we start by looking for the secret, but go on a side plot to break into the Sunglasses Stronghold. Then we go on another side plot to save the poor. Then another side plot to win the election. And only then does everything finally come back together in the Ender arc.
Of the whole video, my biggest regret is making the election arc be as long as it ended up being. It ended up being about the entire middle third of the video. And while it has some good scenes, I think having two debates instead of one was a bad call. Instead, I think I should've had only one debate and have me run as an independent against Colon and Vortrox.
Mat was actually never meant to be in the second debate. Instead, his victory was supposed to come completely out of nowhere. But we figured it didn't break the canon to have him there and he was available so he joined us for that. It probably would be a bit weird to have four people for one debate (Me, Colon, Mat, and Vortrox) but worst case scenario Mat didn't need to be there.
Also, if you're curious, canonically: the reason Mat got elected was because he used the secret to win over voters. And by that I mean he became friends with everyone in Geometry City. This is also why GeoBlitzy gave him access to his riches (they had become friends).
This video was filmed across roughly four days. This is a lot better than the two weeks I heard it took Kenadian to film his parody but I think he might also be including the time it took to build all his sets. I built all the sets for each day a few days in advance of each recording session.
One of the biggest issues I faced while filming was trying to schedule times that everyone who was needed would be available. In my regular videos, I come up with a time and invite people based on that. But obviously, that wouldn't work for this video.
What I ended up doing was dividing the script into four sections, one for each day of recording. I divided it such that each day only needed about six people to record. This helped a bunch but unfortunately meant we had to film a lot of scenes out of order. But honestly, I don't think that ended up being a big deal, and sometimes it led to funny moments like when Sdslayer said he didn't recognize JamAttack (that was one of the first scenes in the entire video we filmed).
But even with this, there were still some people who couldn't make it. For example, Looch was only there for days 1 and 4, so for days 2 and 3 we had other people play him (and sometimes even speak).
But most noticeably, MatMart did not make it for day 4 of recording, so for these scenes he was played by someone else (Ben). Fortunately we turned it into a joke in the video so I don't think it hurts the video too much. It's actually quite funny.
For normal videos, I would never tolerate this. But the best part of making an April Fools video or parody is that you can just do things like this and it works.
Speaking of which, there are so many plot holes and stuff in this video. But they all work because this is an April Fools video/parody.
For example, consider the scene where we befriend Sdslayer aboard the bus. I would never write this in a serious story because it is heavily forcing the plot, which is not good in story telling. But because this is an April Fools video, I could just do this. It was very liberating to just write stuff down without having to worry if it makes sense or not. I honestly encourage people for that reason to consider writing your own parody or April Fools story!
I absolutely loved how Kenadian's video pretty much included bloopers in the video itself. So that's what I did with this!
I've seen some people in the comments asking me to upload a bloopers video, but honestly, most of the best bloopers just made the final cut. We were not afraid to break the fourth wall and show bloopers in the video because, well...they're funny!
A few of the bloopers that didn't make it into the main video were added after the credits, though there are still a few bloopers that I couldn't fit, but not enough to make a whole video on. I might consider making some members only videos though, especially since the raw footage for the 2 minute scene in the video where we try and get 100 signatures ended up being an hour long! It was just super fun.
I am more than glad that I managed to make this video. But never again please!
This is the kind of video I'm happy to make once, but never want to make again. I've been there and done that, but now it's time to move onto bigger and better things.
Also, how could a sequel even work, anyway? I think all plots and arcs were already wrapped up nicely.
That being said, if for whatever reason someone out there is crazy enough to make a fan made addition to this universe, if it doesn't break my plot, I'll be happy to give it the official Moldy stamp of approval to make it canon.
Kenadian's video was actually designed in such a way to where it technically doesn't break the plot of the Unstable Universe and I think that's awesome.
I don't know if a sequel could ever be made to this video, because once again, it wraps everything up nicely. But I definitely think a prequel or more side plots could work.
I'm glad to have made this video, but now it is time to get back on track (no pun intended).
As you can probably tell from my last few videos, I've been experimenting with 1+ hour long videos. And while the Zoink video performed very well, I plan to go back to 20 minute videos.
Whether I do 1+ hour long videos or 20 minute videos, I find the hours of content I ultimately release will be about equal. The difference is in the wait between uploads. 1+ month long waits between every upload is not acceptable by my standards. While definitely acceptable for the occasional masterpiece, I don't want that to be the norm. So going forward, the plan is to upload two 20 minute videos per month.
I will not hit this goal immediately. I will be taking a break after I graduate University in May to rest after a hard final semester and build a new setup (I recently bought a $10,000 PC...I hope it's good). I am also getting my Wisdom teeth pulled because I have surprisingly just never had that done yet.
But come June, that's the plan. It may take me a bit to get a schedule going but hopefully by the end of the year I can reach this goal and start 2027 strong.
In terms of the immediate next video, I have a few ideas:
- Building the most impossible Geometry Dash level. I promised I would do this like five years ago, so I think it's finally time. The plan is to make it post-commentary heavy to practice that skill. I think my live commentary is fine but I'm trying to abandon the "YouTuber voice" that instinctively kicks in when I do post-commentary.
- Hide and Seek 5 might be fun
- Another purple thumbnail video because after this video I might need to get my money up not my funny up...
I also plan to up the quality of future videos. I want to improve my story-telling skills, so I'm going to put a lot more work in designing future challenges to have cool plot twists and satisfying payoffs.
Anyway, I have a report due at midnight. Have a good rest of your day!
